“All that happened, and I quit everything, ate whatever I wanted, and stopped caring about myself… but I changed for her; I want to be there for her when she graduates high school. I want to be a dad that shows up.”
Where Does Your Strength Come From?
In June 2018, Oscar Flores lost his fiancé in an accident with a semi-truck. It devastated him.
Five months later, he began a job at Nussbaum Transportation – a trucking company. How does one have the strength to work surrounded by daily reminders of loss? Oscar Flores did and still does. With support, determination, and the love of his sweet daughter, Oscar is motivated to take on each day and be successful.
As Oscar shared his trials, I was reminded of the verse from Matthew that says:
“if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
He took a step of faith by saying “yes” to Nussbaum amidst his grief, and I believe mountains began to move in that decision. Oscar first took the role of Customer Account Coordinator, and after a year and a half at Nussbaum, he moved to Load Planning.
I asked Oscar, where did his strength come from? He replied with a name.
“Tinley Lynn Flores – my daughter.”
Oscar's Daughter
After Oscar lost his fiancé Kaitlyn, his health declined.
“All that happened, and I quit everything, ate whatever I wanted, and stopped caring about myself.”
When HealthCheck360 presented his biometric score last year, it was a wake-up call.
He looked at Tinley and realized he wanted to be there for the milestones in her life. Oscar found his strength in his daughter. He researched a diet change, took up more activities with Tinley, and developed the gifts of self-control and discipline.
Oscar’s advice to making a lifestyle change is, “Find something you enjoy and get involved in it. I teach both kids’ and adults’ karate, plus my daughter does it too, and it is something we love doing together.”
Family Influence
When asked who helped him in the mountain-moving process, Oscar answered that his family and Nussbaum were his support. The people surrounding him were crucial to his good and bad days.
At work, besides load planning, you will find Oscar walking on his breaks or joining the “push-up crew” in the basement.
Oscar finishes with a bit of wisdom, “Start today and be adventurous with it. Set attainable goals, and soon you will notice the small changes in your body. You will be grateful.”
